Last night we got together with our friend Rick (whom we met on-line via
http://www.tripadvisor.com/ some months before coming to Buenos Aires) for drinks at his place, then off to dinner at a local "porteno" restaurant (at 9:30pm). Lots of great conversation and Malbec and, before you know it, it's 12:30am.
Not done yet, we went to a local ice cream place for dessert. Argentinians love ice cream and there are tons of great places around. We don't know how these people do it, dine out so late and get up for work the next morning.
The past few days we have spent more time discovering different areas of the city. Yesterday (Sun, 3/9) we went back to the Avenida Alvear, first to see the French and Brazilian (shown)embassies...
and then to the Palacio Duhau Hyatt Hotel. You would never know there was a Hyatt on the street....absolutely no signage. We ended up having brunch there, sitting outside on the 2nd floor veranda overlooking the central courtyard, which is very park-like. Then some photos of the inner rooms...too elegant to pass up.
Next stop - the Alvear Palace Hotel (
http://www.alvearpalace.com/v2/home.php), another understated but very elegant hotel. Wandering around the lobby, we found a great place to come back some evening for cocktails and socializing.
Then back to the Recoletta Cemetary for an in-depth visit, as we only touched the surface on our first day in Buenos Aires. We have a ton of pictures from here but are only highlighting a few including Eva (Duarte) Perone's crypt. The sculptures and plaques on most of the crypts are works of art. If I can figure out how to put a link to a slide show of them I will in future posts.

On Saturday, 3/8, we went to Palermo, another near-by neighborhood. We explored some of the galleries and then went to La Cabrera for lunch! This is one amazing restaurant...charming decor, sinfully huge portions and fun-loving waiters bringing lollipop "trees" after coffee and dessert. Barbara had the "Asado ???" - three racks of ribs (portion for one) and I had the "bife de Chorizo" steak the size of medium loaf of bread. We tried our best but with all the sides there was no way we could finish it all. BTW, all of this cost 163 pesos or approx. $55.00 US.

And walking off lunch, through the tranquil Botanical Garden, never felt so good - fountains, statues, foliage, and sunshine.

To top a wonderful day, we decided to go to our local Disco - no, not a nightclub, but the name of the supermarket chain we shop at, to look for "peanut butter and jelly". After all this wonderful fine dining we needed comfort food!
