Airport Arrival by Dave with Barbara "advising"

Almost 6800 miles (Continental Airlines thru Houston) and 25.5 clock hours (actual flight time 15 hours) later we arrived at Ezeiza (BA's international airport). We would have landed on time were it not for 5 turns around the holding pattern (for you pilots) near the airport and a 45 minute delay on the ground waiting for a broken jetway to be fixed (ended up moving the plane by tug to another gate) before we finally exited the plane, all due to a torrential downpour.

Note to reader: Agreeing on the above paragraph's content took 20 minutes of collaboration. This may be a very long process!

After a brief delay (communications issues) we were able to find the taxi hired for us by the apartment rental company (Buenos Aires Habitat). 22 miles and 105 pesos (approx $35 US)later, we arrived at our apartment in the city. People may complain about taxi drivers but our driver, who spoke no English, was wonderful. He had a slight problem finding the apartment (I gave him the right street but didn't have the right building number), but he made a quick phone call and that problem was fixed.

A representative from Buenos Aires Habitat met us in the lobby and showed us around the apartment; including a lesson on how to use the keys to open and close the doors (sure, you may think that would be easy...but there are tricks to be learned!). Our apartment is great (spacious, comfortable, bright and quiet, and located in one of BA's best barrios - the Recoleta). The rental firm and it's people were great- everything from the description of the property on the website to doing the deal was extremely professional.

Note to reader: Barbara said that writing this reminds her of work, which she really loved (she likes "advising"). I on the other hand am looking forward to "consulting" on the next section which will be hers to write!

We are signing off for now as it is 11:36PM, dinner time for the "Portenos" (locals).

Buenas Noches.

Hi Dave and Barbara,
It will be great vicariously enjoying your cultural adventure. Since I don't know if either of you speak Spanish I'd be curious to hear of any misadventures due to wrong translations. I once accidentally orderered veal kidneys in Italy, and was too embarrassed to return them so I forced them down!
If you'd like to meet some nice locals, I have a work friend who lives there and just visited us in Colorado. I also met a very nice , young, hip female pediatric pulmonologist from BA.
Have FUN!

Hi Dave and Barb,
WOW! I love reading about all your adventures, as it really brings BA home to me. Your comentary on the places you've been and the pictures makes one feel as though they are there with you enjoying everything that you enjoy. Your place sounds relaxing and I can't wait to see your sketches. What a great way to capture your vacation, through your own vision. I can't wait to read some more, kind of like reading the chapters of a great novel.
Love to you both,
Erica and Michael

You should definitely make a phone call from the glacier, if you can. I called from atop a glacier in the Canadian Rockies - there I was at 6 or 7000 feet calling a friend in Boston - ET phone home. It's much fun and a total offense to nature. What I could never figure out was where were the towers. I couldn't seen them and there was no service from down in the valleys. Keep having fun and adventures.

If nothing else, I think I've gained 15 pounds reading your blog....

Your wonderful trip could easily be entitled..."See Argentina on five pounds per day" (and we aren't talking British Bucks here).

As a matter of fact, if you two were to print the blog, and put it into hardcover, we could sell it either in the cookbook section or the travel section of the world's bookstores.

The blog is really great...you are making it easy to "be there" with you (...it looks and tastes excellent too).

With love from 'Yeruncl'

Hi Dave & Barbara,
What a great (photo) blog! Looks like you are having a great time, and a rapidly growing readership! You are the talk of the town, at least between Ben Davis & Rickenbacker.

All the best,

Gerd & Barbara
